How can writing help you become a better software engineer? How should a software developer keep track of their work?
I have been writing a development journal, or work log for a long time. I first learned about John Carmack’s writing habits in Masters of Doom with the .plan files. These were updates that he and John Romero posted publicly to keep people updated about Doom and Quake game updates.
Writing what you work on helps you think and plan. It can focus you to work on the most important tasks. I use my log file to ask questions, write down answers to my own questions, draft mini-blog posts, record code snippets, document hard tasks, share links, and general thoughts.
By writing you force yourself to think about the problem, which can help you overcome those tricky challenges.
You become more productive over time because you can search your own problems and solutions. I love being able to search back in my notes for a specific piece of code or configuration that I used. When something is hard, I document it, so that next time it is not as hard.
