It's an in-memory cache that stores a complete snapshot of a page (including the JavaScript heap) as the user is navigating away.
The pageshow event fires right after the load event when the page is initially loading and any time the page is restored from #bfcache.
This is really useful if you want to reflect the changes users made before they came back.
