In case of a beam, lateral support is generally required to be provided for the compression flange to prevent lateral torsional buckling.
However, a full support preventing the rotation of the section is considered preferable.
The lateral support can be of the following types:
(a) Continuous lateral support
In this case, compression flange is braced laterally along its entire span. Chances of local instability of compression flange and overall lateral instability are eliminated.
(b) lateral support at intervals
