The timeline method for footsteps should only be used if the character has no rendered character model. If you're looking to add footsteps to a thirdperson character or NPC, the footstep events should be inserted into the walk animation. However these trace functions can still be used, but should be moved into a parent character class so every character in your game can use those functions.
There is also a variable in CharacterMovement that stores the current floor data. I chose not to use this because in the past it has had issues returning the Physical Material.
This process is exactly the same for UE4 and UE5. There are only minor differences in button styling and location on the screen.
