Sustainable investing has been on the rise as global attitudes towards being green have radically shifted. ESG funds, that invest in companies that are good at managing Environmental, Social, and Governance risks, have gained a lot of traction off the back of this demand. Not least because its proponents suggest that ESG funds can deliver market-beating returns whilst also being greener than a vanilla index fund.
Blackrock ESG Funds (ishares ESG) and Vanguard ESG Funds are two of the big new entrants into this market, and these funds are being pushed heavily by their marketing departments. But what is actually going on under the hood, and is ESG Investing really the future of investing?
