How to do Shading and Cross-hatching
Shading and cross hatching can be quite tricky ideas to get your head around when you fist start drawing
Shading allows us to give an impression of three dimensions on a two dimensional piece of paper. Where you leave the paper white is the light part of the drawing - the highlight - and the dark par is the deepest shadow.
with pencil, basically, the harder you press, the darker the shadow. You can also erase areas to lighten them and create highlights.
Cross-hatching is a technique of using lines to make the shaded areas. Cross hatching in pencil allows for extra darkness and lightness according to the pressure on the pencil.
Drawing in pen and ink, there is only black and white, so shade has to be built up with layers of parallel lines. each layer is at a different angle to the layers underneath . Each layer adds to the darkness of the shaded area.
Cross hatching exercises are great for refine fine motor skills that will be invaluable in your drawings.
