Step 1. Right click the folder and click "Get Info"
Step 2. Select the small folder icon from the top and copy it (⌘+C)
Step 3. Open "Preview" and select File - New from Clipboard
Step 4. Make your changes by adjusting color (Tools) and adding any icon or text with a transparent background by pasting it on top of the folder
Step 5: Copy your new and improved folder (Edit - Copy)
Step 6: Paste (⌘+V) on the small icon you originally selected in the "Get Info" pop-up dialog
