You can display the Word count in the status bar by:
right clicking on the status bar and checking the Word count item or
on the Review tab click on Word Count in the Proofing section of the ribbon.
The Word Count dialog that opens also displays the following in addition to the number of Words:
Pages
Characters (no spaces)
Characters (with spaces)
Paragraphs
Lines
and gives the option of whether or not to include textboxes, footnotes and endnotes in the statistics.
