How to Parallel Park Perfectly Every Time.
Despite being one of the most dreaded driving maneuvers, parallel parking can be surprisingly easy – when you know how it works. There is no denying that parallel parking is harder than both angle parking and perpendicular parking, though like all things, it can be mastered with practice.
Keep in mind that the instructions provided here are generally applicable. You may need to adjust reference points based on the size of your vehicle, how it handles and the specific parallel parking situation.
[Step 1: Finding a Spot]
The first step in parallel parking is finding a suitable spot. Look for a space that's at least one and a half times the length of your vehicle. Ensure that there are no fire hydrants, driveways, or other obstructions in the vicinity.
[Step 2: Positioning Your Vehicle]
Once you've found a spot, signal your intention to park and pull up alongside the car parked in front of the empty space. Make sure your car is roughly parallel to the parked car, leaving about two feet of space between the vehicles.
[Step 3: Reverse Maneuver]
Turn your steering wheel fully towards the curb. Shift your car into reverse and begin backing up slowly. Keep an eye on your rearview and side mirrors to ensure you're aligning your car properly with the curb.
Keep backing up with the wheels fully turned until you can see the back car's license plate in your side mirror. This means you are at 45 degrees.
Step 4 : Angle Adjustment
Straighten the Wheels and back up.
Step 5: Final Adjustment
Stop backing once your car's rear front bumper clears the rear bumper of the car in front of you.
While stopped turn your wheels away from the curb. Now again continue backing slowly until you are in the parking spot
Step 6: Final Positioning
Straighten your wheels and pull forward slightly if needed to center your car within the space. Make sure you're not too close to either car in front or behind you.
