Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild was a prominent French socialite, art collector, and a member of the French wing of the incredibly wealthy Rothschild banking family.
Being born into incredible wealth and privilege, she did what many wealthy people do. She travelled the world and collected artworks many of which are on display at the villa as you can see in the video.
After her death and with no children to inherit the villa she bequeathed it all to the French Academy of Fine Arts, ensuring her legacy would be preserved for generations to come.
Today the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild is considered a French national monument.
It was officially registered as a site of cultural and historical value to France and the world.
The gardens of Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild were created at the same time as the villa itself as Béatrice saw it as a cohesive whole..
The gardens were planned and landscaped to complement the villa's architecture and to offer a variety of stunning vistas as you walk around the various paths.
Viewed from the balcony the garden is in the
shape of a ship and the 30 gardeners employed to look after the garden were dressed in sailor's uniforms with pom poms and sashes so that they looked as if they were tending to the ships duties.
The gardens were completed around the same time as the villa, in 1912. It is a masterpiece of architecture and well worth going to visit.
As you can see It houses an extraordinary collection of furniture, porcelain, sculptures, and fine art paintings.
After her death, she bequeathed the villa to the French Academy of Fine Arts, ensuring its preservation for generations to come.
