While Ukraine’s offensive in the Kursk region has surprised the world with its rapid success, 200 miles to the southeast, Russia’s advance on the city of Pokrovsk, in the eastern Donetsk region, is swiftly gaining momentum.

Described by the Ukrainian army as the “hottest” front of the war, Russian forces are now less than eight miles from the city centre and have captured a string of Ukrainian settlements in recent days.

Footage posted on social media by both sides show a desperate attritional battle being fought around villages like Toretsk, and Niu York.

Mandatory evacuations for children and parents have now been ordered in parts of the Donetsk region, including the Pokrovsk district, but not everyone is complying.

Ukrainian authorities have reported cases of children being hidden to avoid the directive, with families arguing that they have nowhere to go.

So why are the Russians pushing so hard in this direction?

Pokrovsk is not a large city; it was home to around 60,000 people before the war broke out.

But it is an important logistics hub for the Ukrainian military, at an intersection of key supply routes.

This would not only make defence of the Donetsk region far more difficult, but would have a knock-on effect for the Ukrainians all along the front line.
