Installing shaders on a Mac is extremely easy to set up on a Mac. In fact, it’s nearly an identical process to installing shaders for Minecraft on any other operating system. Today, though, we’re going to specifically focus on installing shaders for macOS. This will allow you to download and install and setup shaders for Minecraft on a MacBook, iMac, Mac mini, or any other Apple computer. This process will also work for both M-based Macs and Intel-based Macs. Let’s dive right in to getting shaders for Minecraft on a Mac!
The first step in getting shaders on a Mac is to download OptiFine. You can do this by heading to the official OptiFine website and downloading the latest version or the version for Minecraft that you want to play. For most people, this will be the latest version of OptiFine. Once you have downloaded it from the Optifine downloads page, you can now head off to download your shaders pack. For this video, I’m going to download Makeup Ultrafast Shaders for Minecraft.
When you have downloaded the shaders pack for Mac that you want to use in Minecraft, you can now head to your Mac’s downloads folder. You can usually find this by opening ‘Finder’ on your computer and locating the Downloads folder. For this video on installing shaders for Mac for Minecraft, we’ll drag OptiFine and the shaders pack that we downloaded to our desktop.
Once it is on your desktop, right click on the OptiFine.jar file. It should look like a coffee mug. Under the ‘Open With’ option, you should see Java. If you don’t, you will need to download Java 17 for Mac. You can download Java 17 for Mac by heading to the third link in the description. This will take you to the Java Download page where you can download a version for either Intel-based Macs (x86) or ARM-based Macs (M1, M2, etc.). If you’re unsure what type of Mac you have, hit the Apple Logo in the top left corner of your screen and hit ‘About this Mac.’ This should tell you if you have an Intel or M-chip Mac.
Once Java is downloaded on your Mac, right click on the OptiFine Java once again and hit Open With → Java. Now, you’ll be able to run the OptiFine Java Installer for Mac. Once you hit the Install button in the window, you should get a prompt telling you that it was successfully installed. This means that you now have the Optifine profile on your Mac, allowing you to add a shaders pack to your Minecraft game for Mac.
Now head to Minecraft and open the launcher on your computer. You should automatically have the ‘Optifine’ version selected, but if you don’t, hit Installations in the top bar on the installer and make sure that modded is checked. You can launch Optifine for Mac from here. Now, once you have the OptiFine version of Minecraft open on your Mac, you can head into the settings page for Minecraft where you should see the shaders settings.
Open Shaders in Minecraft settings on your Mac, and the hit open folder. This will open the root folder for Minecraft on your Mac. In here, you can drag the shaders pack for mac that you downloaded earlier. You do not need to unarchive it. It will work properly as a .zip file on your Mac. Once you’ve done that, go back to the Minecraft window and hit done. Now, open the shaders settings again and select the pack that you just added for Minecraft shaders on a Mac.
