One of the questions I get a lot is, "how do I get better at mixing when I can't even hear the difference between the sound with EQ, and without EQ?"
The short answer would be that learning how to mix takes many years to master, and is the visual equivalent of painting with sound. Though no one claims to have mastered the art of mixing overnight, you can speed up the learning process by using two senses instead of only one.
On the one hand some of us learn better by listening, while others learn better by seeing. Most of us learn best while we have both an audio and an accompanying visual to interpret and understand.
Using this type of logic, we can use our eyes and our ears to help us learn the mixing process. By employing both senses, we give ourselves a learning advantage by seeing the sound with a spectrum analyzer, and hearing the sound with our ears.
This video demonstrates how to use a spectrum analyzer, along with your eyes and ears, to learn how different genre's of music are mixed as well as how to use this knowledge to improve your own mixes.

Keep on makin' music,
