We took a Kazakh sleeper train from Tashkent, Uzbekistan to a small town called Shu in Kazakhstan with no plan of what to do or what to expect when we arrived. Our only goal was to try and find some transport to take us to the Kyrgyzstan border and try to get to Bishkek that evening. As we were disembarking the train in Shu, our fellow cabin-mate warned us "Be careful, it's Criminal City out there".
Our first Central Asian train journey was a lot of fun, we met military personnel from both Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, sniffer dogs, and a very outgoing ticket inspector who was overly keen to know my opinions on current world affairs. Our soviet dining experience was incredible, we ate a classic Kazakh meal and drank vodka with the no-BS dining car staff. This is when I found myself in debt to the Kazakh train bosses when I was unable to pay for my meal with my card.
We had a beautiful drive through rural Kazakhstan at golden hour and arrived at the border after a few hours of Kazakh music and inhaling second-hand smoke. The border crossing between Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan was easy, and there were no issues. We searched for the cheapest transport into Bishkek and arrived at our accommodation, Izzi Hostel in Bishkek, where we showed what £10 per night gets you in Kyrgyzstan.
