Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Trust has been awarded £63m through the ‘Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme’ to enable us to significantly reduce our carbon footprint. This includes installing state of the art, eco-friendly ground source heat pumps. However, how does a ground source heat pump work and how does it cut carbon?
BWC NHS emitted 63,701 tonnes of eCO2 in 2020/2021. That's a lot - to keep this much CO2 in balance with our planet would need a mature forest the size of Birmingham. Clearly this isn't possible, and we're not alone. As the largest employer in Britain, the NHS is responsible for around four per cent of the nation's total carbon emissions.
We therefore must be a major part of the solution to reduce our environmental impact. It is for this reason that we are committed to tackle climate change with BWC working towards becoming carbon ‘net zero’ in the emissions we directly produce by 2040.
