How to do: Turn a Broken Umbrella Into a Magazine Rack
Learn to turn and recycle those old thunderstorm-worn umbrellas into working magazine racks.
Instructions Quick Tip:
Create magazine rack pockets with fabric by sewing extra pieces into the sides. Step 1 Double the rectangle and sew the folded edge together, leaving a one-eighth inch loop to slide rods through, forming the pockets of the magazine rack.
Step 2 Turn the fabric over and fold and sew the ends of the rectangle, making loops in either side on the opposite side of the center loop.
Step 3 Tape the remaining six spokes to each other, making three rods. Did You Know:
Recyclers recover more than 100 million pounds of materials from electronics each year. Step 4 Slide one rod through each loop in the fabric and secure the ends to the stand’s frame.
Step 5 Cut the sides from the fabric, leaving a rectangle of umbrella fabric with a point at either end.
Step 6 Secure each side to the corners with the pliers and more wire, crossing the base with the same wire, and securing it at each side. Quick Tip:
If the wire is salvageable, use it to connect the sides and base. Step 7 Use the pliers to untwist the spokes from the central mechanism.
Step 8 Fold every other spoke upward to form the sides of the magazine rack.
Step 9 Fold two spokes downward to form the base.
Step 10 Attach all four sides, made by the upturned spokes, to the base by threading wire through the holes in the downturned spokes.
Step 11 Use the scissors to cut or gently pull the umbrella’s fabric from the spokes, unscrewing any screws along the way.
