Modulation effects (chorus, phaser, flanger, vibrato, tremolo, rotary speaker, and more) can be the spices that make the difference between a boring, generic tone and something a little more exciting.
Used properly, modulation effects can create separation between layers in a looping scenario or movement and motion in what might otherwise be a stagnant line of whole notes.
