According to an investigation into the TransAsia plane that crashed into Taipei’s Keelung River earlier this year, the crew had shut off the aircraft’s working engine after the other lost power.

An analysis of the flight’s data records show that 37 seconds after the plane took off from Taipei’s Songshan Airport, the aircraft’s No. 2 engine went idle. Cockpit voice and flight data recorders reveal that when the pilots in the cockpit became aware of the issue, they discussed shutting down the aircraft’s No. 1 engine rather than the No. 2 engine.

The powerless engine completely stopped just as the pilots shut down the working engine. While the plane could have flown with just one engine, the loss of both engines prompted the plane to stall and crash.

Reuters reports that sources close to the investigation say that human error probably caused the three pilots onboard the TransAsia flight to shut down the aircraft’s working engine. The Aviation Safety Council says that it will continue to investigate why both engines lost power.

The TransAsia Airways flight was carrying 53 passengers and five crew members.
