So, what do you get when you mix post-apocalyptic sci-fi, hip-hop and samurai anime? Well, Afro Samurai, of course. This avant-garde manga series by Takashi Okazaki ran in Nou Nou Hau magazine for just three years, from 1998 to 2002, but it is still considered to be one of the most unique battle manga ever created. And well, as with every successful manga, the series was eventually adopted into anime as a miniseries and a television film. However, we were definitely caught off-guard by the fact that Hollywood legend Samuel L. Jackson decided to feature in these properties as our protagonist, Afro. And well, both the miniseries and the film turned out to be a heady mix of badass action, seamless aesthetics, slick one-liners and a banging soundtrack by RZA. It's no wonder the series earned two Emmy nominations for its achievements and has enjoyed a loyal cult of fans ever since.
