The gradient divergence and curl are three important concepts in vector calculus that describe the behavior of vector fields.

The gradient is a vector operator that gives the rate of change of a scalar field in all directions. In other words the gradient of a scalar field is a vector field that points in the direction of the greatest rate of increase of the scalar field and its magnitude is proportional to the rate of change. Can be used to find the maximum or minimum values of a scalar field or to describe the direction of flow in a scalar field.
