The Final Forest, otherwise known as the foggy forest, is in the North West of Madeira. It's famous for two things: twisted, gnarly trees.....and fog.
Madeira plays host to incredibly variable (and inclement) weather, with the South Eastern tip being bone dry but the hills in the north west appear to catch all of the rainfall.
Final Forest is a relatively easy 1 hour+ drive from Funchal, though it should be noted that it's all uphill. As such, if you're like me and went for the cheapest car, be prepared to struggle up the steep roads with a little 1 litre Fiat.
The forest itself is one of the last 'early growth' forests left in Europe, essentially meaning that it is very very old (over 600 years old). The trees themselves are knotted and twisted. This, coupled with the thick fog and rain that often covers the area makes it an eerily peaceful place to visit.
There is a trail (PR13 - Vereda do Fanal) if you want, though I just wandered around the area trying not to get too wet. If you are visiting Fanal Forest, I'd highly recommend not only getting there in the morning before the sun burns off the fog, but also take either a waterproof or a poncho.
Is it worth visiting? Yes. It's really easy to get to, no entry fee and if you're into trees or nature then this is definitely a place you'll want to go.
