Back home in the States, a car is pretty much a need to have in order to get around and to get stuff down. However, here in Taiwan, transportation options abound!

Here are 9 ways to get around the city without having to own a car. It's totally convenient and completely affordable!

Getting Around the City

Walking & Hiking

The central city area in the cities in Taiwan are totally walkable! Options for groceries, dining, and shopping abound! There's pretty much a market, 7-11 (or Family Mart) on every corner. Taking an umbrella with you is a not a bad idea for those occasional rain showers or even for extra shade on those hot humid simmer days!

Bikes and Bike Rentals (You Bike)

Another great option for getting around town is by bicycle. People here love to ride bikes and it shows! People are riding bikes all hours of the day and on all sorts of bikes! Not to mention the fact that the major cities have a very developed bike path network that allow you to get from one end of town to the other while avoiding most road traffic. Some of these bike paths are downright epic. It's pretty obvious that bikes are not only a primary means of transport but pretty much a highlight or major tourist activity for those visiting Taiwan. Take time to ride on the bike paths here on your next visit. All of them are amazing!

Electric Bikes (License and Registration Not Required)

Want the fun of two wheels but a bit more convenience than pedal power? Consider getting a battery powered bike. These come in two flavors. The first is a standard gas or battery powered scooter which does require a license. Rental shops should be quite easy to locate around town and will require a license of some sort depending on your specific home country and type of license. In some cases, an international license should be sufficient.

Scooters & Motorcycles

Scooters rule here in Taiwan. And for good reason, the are relatively affordable, especially when compared to the cost of owning a car and it is always convenient to find parking with a scooter. Not to mention they are down right fun to tool around the city on!

Cars

One of the first things that you will notice about cars in Taiwan is that there is a healthy and prevalent second hand car market here. It is not surprising to see cars that are still ten or even twenty years old still on the roads here!

Buses

Buses are another added convenience here in Taiwan - especially since the cities here are so safe and walkable! Not to mention the fact that they are super affordable. They will take some extra figuring out but once you do - they are pretty hard to beat in terms of cost and convenience.

The major bus schedules including other public transit options can be found here:

Taxi's and Uber

While Lyft doesn't seem to have a presence here - Uber does. The same app that you use for Uber I your home country should work here provided that you have a local SIM card for your mobile phone. Uber drivers are generally super friendly here!

Tipping is generally not required or expected here but depends on the situation (traveling with tons of luggage or staying at a high end place) but even then may be viewed as optional and discretionary.

Metro
