Mac Pro 2013 Review vs Retina Macbook Pro 2012 for Programming Video Editing and Gaming

You want to know how a Mac is going to perform in real-world scenarios. I bought a Mac Pro 2013 to test it out in April and waiting 5 weeks before I got it in May. The comparison was a retina Macbook Pro 2012 and both were running Mavericks.

Mac Specs
Mac Pro 2013
16GB 1866MHz DDR3 ECC memory
3.5GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5 processor
512GB flash storage
Dual AMD FirePro D500 with 3GB GDDR5 VRAM each

Retina Macbook Pro 2012
2.6GHz Intel Core i7 (4 core)
16GB 1600MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024MB

The Mac Pro is a super popular new Mac and it's really targeted at video editors. It's a powerhouse with both ScreenFlow and Final Cut Pro X, but it falls a little shorter than I expected with Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 Reaper of Souls. Read on for more details about the performance comparison.

The Mac Pro was able to render 15 videos from ScreenFlow in 53 minutes, while a Macbook Pro 2012 rendered 15 1080p videos in 98 minutes. Almost a 2x improvement (1.8x), which is great if you have tons of videos from screen casting.

In Final Cut Pro X the Mac Pro really pulled ahead with a 54 minute 1080p video. It rendered the video within 23 minutes, while the Macbook Pro rendered it after 55 minutes.

Streaming video the Mac Pro was able to do 1080p streaming with Wireshark for YouTube without maxing out the CPU (40%) or RAM. On the Macbook Pro 1080p streaming cripples the machine and causes tons of frame drops. You can only do 720p on the Macbook Pro.

Game performance in Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 Reaper of Souls was good, but it wasn't great on the D500 graphics cards. You can't max out the resolution in either game on the 27" Thunderbolt display. You can compromise for around 2048x1152 and get solid 59/60 FPS. Any lower and the menus are sluggish and too many characters will cause tons of stuttering which will impact your ability to act and respond.
