Gaur, also known as the Indian bison, is a large wild even-toed ungulate that lives in the forests and mountainous regions of South and Southeast Asia. Gaurs are the largest representatives of the genus of bovines and can reach a weight of up to 1,500 kg, with males usually significantly larger than females. They have a powerful, muscular body covered with dark hair, which can be almost black in adult males, and brown in females and young individuals.

Gaurs have characteristic massive horns that curve upward and to the sides, giving them an impressive appearance. Despite their size and strength, gaurs usually lead a peaceful lifestyle, feeding on grass, leaves and other plant foods. They live in small herds, which can number from a few to several dozen individuals, and actively avoid meeting people.

These animals are an important element of the ecosystems of their habitats, but gaurs are under threat due to habitat loss and poaching, although some countries are taking active measures to protect them.
