Scientists Discovered Something Ancient Inside The World's Biggest Cave You Never Knew Existed
One of the most incredible caves today is the Son Doong Cave in Vietnam’s Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park. It’s the world’s largest cave, and its size is unbelievable until you see it. Named ‘Mountain River Cave’ because of the river inside, it wasn’t fully recognized until a farmer, Ho Khanh, found it in 1991 during a storm. In 2009, British explorers Howard and Deb Limbert mapped its massive size.
Son Doong stretches over 5.5 miles long, with ceilings up to 650 feet high and some parts nearly 500 feet wide. It’s so big that a New York City block, including 40-story buildings, could fit inside. The main passage alone is over 3.1 miles long, making Son Doong one of the largest caves ever discovered.
