From the sacred rites associated with the first Olympic games in ancient Greece to the key role of muscular Christianity in the emergence of modern sport, religious practice and athletic endeavor have often been closely intertwined. In many contemporary societies, sport has become a locus of religious fervor and anxiety, as witnessed in the increasing visibility of religious practices and symbols in elite sport. The intersections of religion and sport – both of which place great value on bodily and moral discipline, earthly uncertainty, divine intervention, individual agency, and the construction of meaningful social relations – reveal tensions, commonalities and influences on key areas of human existence.
