While the YAMAHA SHS-10 keytar and its bigger brother, the SHS-200, look absolutely stunning (if you're into '80s retro-future design, that is), truth be told they are fundamentally toy keyboards. They do, however, have a MIDI out port. Is that enough to make them usable? What MIDI messages are they able to send besides note on/off ones? In this video, I take a deep dive into just that, showing you every single MIDI control of these keyboards and actually connecting my SHS-200 to my laptop via bluetooth MIDI to control my software synth of choice, Vital, and even some of Ableton Live's parameters.
