Pull on the working loop longer.
Insert hook into the loop of the first single crochet in the current row and pull the elongated loop through the working (now joining) chain so that not to twist it.
To change the color, pull on the working loop not longer as without color changing. The rest of its length will be with a new color.

Important: the joining (simulated) single crochet will be the last in the row, not the first. Therefore, all the increases are counted from the second (normal) single crochet.
In case the increase falls on the last single crochet work just one single crochet, and the joining single crochet will be the second.
