But, what’s next after the 30 Day Excel Analyst programme? You’ve put in the hard work, so now you should start thinking about how to make it pay off in your career. In this session, I share the story of how I accelerated my career with exactly the toolkit we teach on 30 Day Excel Analyst. If you’re interested in being an Excel freelancer, today’s session with be very useful for you. But, if you’re simply interested in doing more analytical work as part of your current role, you’ll also benefit from the practical tips and tricks we’ll cover. So, let’s get into it!
Your Excel career comprises four rough stages which I call ‘seasons’. We’ll talk through each one including your general activity at each stage, how it feels, and how specifically to move onto the next one. You could consider it a roadmap for your analytical career.
The first season is realization. You’ve realized you enjoy doing Excel-based work. Fantastic! Possibilities open up: could you do more Excel work, and could you, one day, get paid for it? The aim at this stage is to undertake one (just one) non-trivial piece of Excel work for somebody else. This is not a paid project, it’s more about experience. Content creation is the best strategy for building your profile as an Excel analyst, so we’ll also start experimenting with platforms and formats at this stage.
The second season is that of the ‘Weekend Warrior’. You’re doing more Excel work, perhaps as part of your current role, and building a reputation as the ‘go-to’ Excel expert in your workplace. People begin to enquire about your availability for projects. Great! The aim at this stage is to undertake a project – and get paid for it. You need to start thinking about infrastructure now – how to get paid, for example, and how to create content. Because, at the same time, we’re constructing a content-creation machine! That sounds scary, but it need not be, and I’ll explain how to do it during the session.
The third season is the ‘Side Hustle’. At this point, a small roster of clients is taking shape due mainly to referrals and positive word-of-mouth. You’ve completed around five projects – including invoicing for them and getting paid. Content creation is less nerve-wracking now and you feel confident putting together high-value output, for free. You’re building a small following online. Time feels tight, however, and it can be difficult to get everything done alongside your full-time job. Still, it feels pretty good to be making money from Excel! Now might feel like the time for a bold strategic move – negotiating a reduction of your working hours, for example, to free up time for your new business.
The fourth season is the ‘Full Timer’. You’ve got through a tricky period transitioning from your old career to new. But, things have settled and, though the initial excitement of doing something you love has dissipated somewhat, running a small but viable business feels awesome! The content machine ticks over as your following builds, further increasing interest in your new brand. As your organic reach increases, your thoughts turn to how to grow the business …
