Am I wrong for saying to my 14-year-old daughter that she has an average appearance?
I'm a 39-year-old mother with a 14-year-old daughter who is insecure and has a depressing and unhealthy obsession with her appearance.
Very often, she avoids mirrors and photos because her mood plummets when she sees herself.
She constantly asks her father and me if we think she's pretty, and we always tell her the same thing: that she is a beautiful girl inside and out.
I understand that most teenage girls struggle with their body image, but my daughter's vanity is not only draining those around her, but I fear it's slowly eroding her self-esteem.
Yesterday, she told me that the kids at school think she is ugly and say she looks like a bird because of her big nose.
Then she asked me to be honest and tell her if we were lying when we said she was beautiful.
I told her that she had an average appearance, like most people in the world, and that there was nothing wrong with that.
She immediately got up without saying a word and locked herself in her room. Since then, she's been distant and cold. I think she got upset with me.
Do you think I shouldn't have told her that?
