Tutorial - How to create menus in the Shortcuts application in iOS.
We start with a simple menu provided by the Shortcuts application itself. Then I show you how to make prettier menus which include subtitles and icons. To do this we need to use the application Toolbox Pro.
The very simple menus you get from Shortcuts are easy to create and manage. Use a menu and put access to it on the home screen. You can then tap on the icon based upon what is you want to do. Instead of looking for an application you think about the task in hand. Or clean up the home screen so you have one icon to access many options.
For example, you want to create a note. This is your starting point in your head. Tap an icon which gives you a choice of two or three applications to use. Or it could give you a couple of different choices based upon input method. If it's a note for personal use, it might go to a specific application so you know where to look for all of your personal notes later. If the note is for work you use a different application.
Give yourself an option to input a note using dictation. If it is a short note that could be taken care of by the dictation available within the shortcut. If it's a long note then you could open up an application like Ada Dictation. That dictation app gives you transcription rather than dictation. This is good because you can listen to what it was you actually said and compare it with the words generated by the speech to text engine. Or have another option taking you straight to Drafts which also has a good Siri dictation option as well as your keyboard text entry.
In this video I show you how to create the menu using text. This is one of the possibilities using Toolbox Pro which is a sidecar application to Shortcuts in iOS. Toolbox Pro adds a number of extra possibilities to extend what you can do with Shortcuts. It's not just for adding icons and subtitles to menus. You can also use it to provide extra tools allowing you to do more iOS automation.
