In nuclear power plants, the heat energy produced during the nuclear fission reaction is used to generate electrical energy. The commonly used fuel for fission reactions is U-235. But the natural uranium we pull out of mines consists of only 0.7% of U-235. The rest is made of U-238. Nuclear power plants need uranium with 3 to 5% U-235. Therefore, we have to increase the percentage composition of U-235. This process is called the enrichment of uranium.
