When I started acting a few years ago, I didn’t know what acting really was, let alone how to book a job and start an acting career. When I first started auditioning for Casting Directors, I noticed a pattern of them wanting me to be able to adjust quickly, and do the scene in a different way, closer to what the Writer, Director, and Producers want.

I went out and took a ton of acting classes because I wanted to be able to make these adjustments, and honestly was terrified of not knowing how to get there. Through studying, I learned through time that what's important is to find a technique that works for you because we are all different. I was exposed to a number of different teachers and techniques, some of which didn't work as well for me as others, but I loved being exposed to the different ways of doing things.

This video simply shows what I've learned in my dabbling with trying to learn new things. It's not my intention to showcase good acting or how using different techniques will automatically result in a different outcome or performance. You can use two different techniques and the result could possibly be exactly the same.

In the beginning, I used different acting techniques for different situations. As of this update in Feb 2020, I've kind of evolved and simplified things for myself in my preparation for auditions. But having the knowledge of these techniques is helpful in case I find myself in a pickle and nothing seems to click.

For example, if I get an audition for an action/adventure/sci fi film or TV show, I would maybe use a more Meisner approach, where I put all the attention on the other actor, letting what they do and say dictate my response. If it’s for a role where I had to be a macho, testosterone filled guy, I may use a technique that comes from the crotch which sometimes does the trick. Or if it’s for a very dramatic, painful, angry scene (think Tom Hardy type of stuff), I would count on Strasberg to really tap into and access that anger and pain. For some of the techniques like Uta Hagen’s substitution, you can read more about this on the internet, as it would make this video way too long! ☺ The basics of substitution is to replace the actor you are talking to with someone you already know that makes you feel the way you need to feel in the scene.

All this allows me to be versatile, and pliable in any situation that’s thrown at me. It takes the stress away, because most of the time, I know I'd be able to make those adjustments quickly when needed. There’s a ton of other factors too like nerves which still to this day can get in the way and render all this info useless. Acting is a fun, beautiful, but tough craft and one of the most rewarding things I've ever experienced. I hope you enjoy this video and find it useful.
