Dr Alina Finch is Doctor of Philosophy at the Institute of Cancer and Genomic Science.

Current treatment for brain tumours largely relies on targeting cancerous cells which are actively dividing. However, cancer stem cells (CSCs), which make up a small percentage of an overall tumour, divide and grow either very slowly or not at all. This means that these cells are often not targeted during treatment, leading to relapse of the disease. Here we discuss what CSCs are, how they contribute to disease relapse and how these obstacles are being addressed in the lab.
