A surprising amount of Americans don't realize that the United States practically stole all of this land from Mexico, including parts of Texas and California.
In the mid 1800’s, the United States was busy expanding its territory westward. They started bumping into the recently independent country of Mexico, which at the time wanted a way for their country to become more economically productive, so they started renting out huge plots of land to American settlers in this region you might have heard of called Texas.
Americans who settled the land ended up breaking the law a lot. As the Mexican government tried to crack down on these settlers for breaking the law, these settlers responded by fighting a war with the Mexican government, which they won, and then declared themselves as their own independent country of the Republic of Texas. Mexico acknowledged Texas as independent, but the government disputed where the border was (this will be important late).
A few years after its independence, Texas was annexed by the United States, which was still looking westward for land to take over.
