It has an area of 36.52 km², 1053 inhabitants (2011) and density population of 28.8 inhab./km².It has an adjoining village, Fontão.It is part of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park.

Loriga, located in the southwest part of Serra da Estrela, is 20 km from Seia, 80 km from Guarda and 320 km from Lisbon. The village is accessible by the EN 231 and EN 338, a road completed in 2006, following a pre-existing route, with a route of 9.2 km of mountain landscapes, between elevations of 960 m (Portela do Arão) and 1650 m , next to Lagoa Comprida. It is known as the "Portuguese Switzerland" due to its extraordinary geographical location. It is located at an altitude of around 770 m, in its lowest urban part, surrounded by mountains, of which Penha dos Abutres (1828 m altitude) and Penha do Gato (1771 m) stand out, and is embraced by two watercourses: Ribeira da Nave and Ribeira de São Bento, which join after the E.T.A.R. to form the Ribeira de Loriga, one of the tributaries of the Alva River."
