What is POP?
POP stands for Plaster of Paris. It's a white powder that, when mixed with water, transforms into a malleable paste that hardens over time. Its smooth texture and versatility make it a popular material for intricate ceiling designs.
Materials
Plaster of Paris (POP): The core material for the design.
Chicken Mesh: Used as a base to hold the POP in place, providing structural support.
Screws and Nails: To fasten the chicken mesh to the existing ceiling.
Joint Tape: To cover seams and joins, creating a smooth finish.
Sandpaper: For smoothing rough areas and creating even surfaces.
Primer and Paint: To finish and decorate the POP design.
Tools
Trowels and floats: For applying, spreading, and shaping the POP.
Measuring Tape: For accurate measurements and design layouts.
Spirit Level: To ensure level surfaces.
Utility Knife: To cut the chicken mesh.
Paint Brushes and Rollers: For priming and painting.
Safety Equipment: Gloves, dust mask, eye protection.
The Process
Preparation:
Clear the room of furniture and cover the floor to protect from dust and debris.
Design your desired POP ceiling pattern. Consult with a professional if needed.
Clean the existing ceiling and repair any cracks or imperfections.
Framing:
Measure and cut the chicken mesh to fit the shape of your ceiling.
Attach the chicken mesh securely to the existing ceiling using screws or nails. Ensure it's properly spaced and well-supported to handle the POP weight.
Mixing the POP:
Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully on the POP packaging.
Gradually add POP into a bucket of water and mix thoroughly until a smooth, workable paste is formed. Don't make the mix too runny.
Applying the POP:
Apply a base coat of POP to the chicken mesh with a trowel. Spread it evenly, covering the entire mesh, but don't make it excessively thick.
Let the base coat dry partially.
Apply a second layer of POP, using a float and trowels to create desired shapes, textures, and designs.
Work in sections, ensuring each section is completed before moving on.
Drying and Sanding
Allow the POP to dry completely. This may take 24-48 hours depending on the thickness and humidity.
Once dry, gently sand the POP design to achieve a smooth, even surface. Start with medium-grit sandpaper, finishing with finer grit as needed.
Finishing:
Apply a coat of primer to the POP ceiling. This ensures better paint adhesion and a more even finish.
Paint the ceiling with your desired color and finish. Apply multiple coats if needed for full coverage.
Design Considerations:
Room Size and Height: Larger rooms allow for more elaborate designs, while smaller rooms benefit from simpler patterns to avoid looking overcrowded. Consider ceiling height as well.
Lighting: Think about incorporating lighting fixtures into your design. Recessed lights, cove lighting, or a central chandelier can interact beautifully with POP designs.
Styles: Range from simple, clean lines and geometric shapes (modern) to elaborate curves and moldings (traditional).
Additional Tips:
Start with a simple design if you're attempting POP ceiling work yourself.
Practice your mixing and application techniques on a scrap piece of drywall before working on the ceiling.
Work in small sections to maintain control over the wet POP.
Wear safety gear to protect yourself from dust and debris.
For complex designs or large rooms, it's advisable to hire a professional POP ceiling installer.
