While many listeners immediately associate this smash hit with Whitney Houston's massively successful 1992 version, "I Will Always Love You" was penned by Dolly Parton in 1973 as a farewell of sorts to her former partner and mentor Porter Wagoner. She envisioned the song as an amicable parting between two people, which is a far cry from the turmoil depicted in "Jolene," a song she wrote the same day.
