To this day, Carcassonne is the largest and best-preserved medieval fortress in Europe, one of France's most visited monuments. The Cité of Carcassonne has about 2500 years of history and has been occupied in different ages by Romans, Visigoths, and Crusaders.

In 1659, after the Treaty of the Pyrenees, the province of Roussillon became a part of France and the city lost its military significance, resulting in its abandonment.
The French Government, in 1849, decided that the city fortifications should be demolished, but with the help of Jean-Pierre Cros-Mayrevieille, a campaign was launched to preserve the fortress as a historical monument. The government later reversed its decision and in 1853 restoration works began by the architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc.
The Cité of Carcassonne, with three kilometers of ramparts, consists of two walls, 52 towers, barbicans, beautiful streets, and the superb Gothic cathedral, as well as the castle. In 1997, it was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites because of its exceptional testimony to the architecture and planning of a medieval fortress town.
