“I think books are a dignity-affirming instrument,” says Reginald Dwayne Betts.

A poet and lawyer, Dwayne Betts is on a mission to put more libraries inside prisons with the nonprofit Freedom Reads.

“All I was around was concrete and steel and plastic,” he says about his time behind bars. “I never got to see a tree, let alone to see wood where I lived.”
