Starship Flight 5 New License, 2 Weeks Countdown! Why Europe’s Rocket Exploded...
Onward to the next chapter! As the launch date for Flight 5 approaches, preparations and procedures are intensifying, promising new milestones.
Meanwhile, in Europe, a rocket company faced a setback during a test with their rocket, which was anticipated to compete with SpaceX's Falcon 9, highlighting the challenges of rocket development.
In contrast, Falcon 9 continues to demonstrate its superiority, securing a valuable launch contract.
If you're ready, let's dive into these developments on today's episode of Great SpaceX.
Starship Flight 5 New License, 2 Weeks Countdown! Why Europe’s Rocket Exploded...
You know, we’re already in the second half of August, and September—the month Elon Musk once set for Starship Flight 5—is right around the corner.
We’re all aware that in this upcoming flight, SpaceX will attempt to land the Super Heavy booster using the Mechazilla Arm. Recently, SpaceX took a significant step forward by receiving approval from the FCC, which posted the license on its X page. The license is valid from August 18, 2024, to February 15, 2025. Under the Purpose of Operation section, the agency states: “Launch vehicle communications for test flight mission launching from Starbase, Texas. The first stage booster will either return to the launch site or perform a controlled water landing.”

This means that SpaceX’s proposal for catching the booster with the Mechazilla Arm has been initially accepted—by the FCC, at least. What we're still waiting for is a similar decision from the FAA. Despite the absence of a mishap investigation, the FAA has yet to make any significant progress, possibly because they’re still evaluating SpaceX's new mission proposal for the next flight.
As I mentioned, catching a rocket with the Mechazilla Arm is an unprecedented move that will undoubtedly set SpaceX apart from the rest.
As for the mission process, Starship will still launch, separate as in previous flights, with the second stage attempting to reach orbit, completing its assigned tasks, then reentering and landing in the ocean.
But the real difference will come from the Super Heavy booster. After separation, it will be guided back to Starbase. For this to happen smoothly, the engines and grid fins must work in perfect harmony. As the booster approaches Starbase, these systems become increasingly critical for navigation and deceleration.
