Half-goat… half-demon… this horned, hairy creature carries chains and a basket on his back that he uses to haul bad children to the underworld. This is the story of Krampus. Krampus earns his name from the German word for ‘claw’. He is a combination of a pagan horned god and the Christian devil, with one human foot and one cloven hoof. During the Feast of St. Nicholas, Krampus accompanies St. Nick, and on Krampusnacht, he appears on the streets, where he brandishes his long, pointed tongue while delivering coal and swatting at children with a bundle of sticks. The Krampuskarten tradition begins with the exchange of greeting cards featuring the holiday demon. Krampus is experiencing a cultural revival, with events like a Krampuslauf, where runners drink schnapps before going on a run dressed as the beast.
