Microsoft has ended the extended support for Windows 8.1 on January 10, 2023. That means those of you still running the old operating system after that time will no longer be able to get security fixes, technical support, and other types of updates or assistance. For that, you will need to install Windows 10 or 11. Fortunately, there are ways you can directly upgrade from Windows 8.1.

SORRY FOR THE CONFUSION!
Sorry, you cannot run Microsoft’s PC Health Check Tool to see if your computer can handle Windows 11 since that tool is designed for Windows 10 and won’t work in Windows 8.1. Instead, you can use ANY OTHER SOFTWARE to perform the test.

Before getting started, here is what you need to do:
✓ Confirm that your copy of Windows is properly activated. This is especially important if you recently reinstalled Windows.
✓ Check for any recent driver updates, especially for network and storage hardware.
✓ Download and install any available BIOS updates for your hardware; this step is especially important for systems that were originally sold in 2015 or earlier, before the release of Windows 10.
✓ Back up your data files to an external hard drive or cloud storage (or both). Consider doing a full system backup to an external hard drive using the Windows 7 backup program, which is also available in Windows 8.x and Windows 10/11. Just run the command Sdclt.exe, and then choose the 'Create A System Image' option.
✓ Temporarily uninstall third-party security software and low-level system utilities that can interfere with the upgrade. You can reinstall those programs after the upgrade is complete.

Finally, disconnect any unnecessary external devices, especially USB flash drives and external hard drives. (Several common installation errors can be traced to the Setup program, being confused by these additional drives.)

The most important thing to remember is that the Windows 8.1 to Windows 11 upgrade could wipe your settings and apps. It’s not always possible to keep all of your existing apps. Make sure you’ve noted what apps you use regularly so you can easily obtain them by downloading the installers again.

➤ LIST OF GENERIC PRODUCT KEYS TO INSTALL WINDOWS 11 EDITIONS:

Generic keys (aka: "default keys") for Windows 10 from Microsoft will allow you to install a specific Windows 10 edition you want, but will not activate it.

HERE'S HOW TO UPGRADE FROM WINDOWS 8.1 TO WINDOWS 11:
1. REMEMBER: BACK UP ALL OF YOUR IMPORTANT DATA, SUCH AS YOUR DOCUMENTS, PHOTOS, APPS, VIDEOS, etc!
2. Head over to Microsoft’s Windows 10 download site: https://www.microsoft.com/software-do...
3. In the Create Windows 11 Installation Media section, select the “Download tool now", and double-click the MediaCreationTool.exe to launch the Windows 11 setup wizard.
4. Click "Accept" to the licensing agreement.
5. Select the "Upgrade this PC" now option to download the files and begin the upgrade.
6. Click the "Next" button.
7. Type a valid Windows 11 product key for the edition you’re trying to upgrade (if applicable).
8. Click the "Next" button.
9. Click the "Accept" button to agree to the licensing agreement again.
10. You’ll then be asked whether you want to keep your personal files or start afresh. Remember: starting afresh or keeping your files still means that all apps and settings will be deleted for the Windows 10 upgrade. Make sure to select the "Keep personal files and apps" option.
11. Click the "Install" button.

Once the upgrade is complete, you’ll need to go through the easy out-of-box-experience (OOBE) to finish setting up Windows 11, and then you’ll once again see your familiar desktop and every new feature included with Windows 11.

After the installation completes, you should receive a digital license for Windows 11, which can be found under Settings 🡲 Update & Security 🡲 Activation.

The digital license is associated with that specific device, which means you can reformat the disk and perform a clean installation of the same edition of Windows 11 anytime.

NOTE: Additionally, make sure to use Device Manager to check that every piece of hardware is installed correctly on your system, reinstall your antivirus, and any other software you have uninstalled before the upgrade.
