A man has died, and another is in hospital after an explosion on a major Queensland highway involving a truck carrying 42 tonnes of ammonium nitrate.
Emergency crews were called to a head on collision between a ute and B-Double truck on the Bruce Highway in Bororen just after 5am.
A 2.5 kilometre exclusion zone was declared and 49 people self-evacuated to the township of Bororon after the vehicles erupted into flames.
Just after 9:40am an explosion was heard and felt in the area, with an approximate blast radius of 500 metres.
A man behind the wheel of the ute died at the scene, while the truck driver was taken to hospital with serious leg and head injuries.
