June 6 marks the 79th anniversary of the Allied invasion of Normandy, France, during World War II, in an operation to liberate France from occupation by Nazi Germany, a pivotal moment in the war. The Normandy landings on June 6, 1944, also known as D-Day or Operation Overlord, marked the largest seaborne invasion in history and a significant turning point signaling the start of the decline of Nazi Germany. More than 160,000 troops landed on the beaches, with heavy casualties.
