The Tumba is the mother of Cuban music. The drums of Africa bring the French court of Versailles back to life. When Suleidis is not strutting in a courtly dress, she is swaying on the streets to popular music.
For many years, Tumba was practiced by French descendants only, but is now open to all. In Santiago as well as Guantanamo, schools teach young children the dances and songs, to perpetuate this two-hundred-year-old tradition, now endangered.
