About This Episode:
Dmitry Krymov is an outstanding theater director, winner of five "Golden Masks" awards and two "Crystal Turandots." He is the hero of the latest episode of "Tell Gordeeva." Before February 24, 2022, nine of Krymov's plays were being performed to full houses in Moscow, with rehearsals for new productions underway in several theaters.
On February 25, 2022, Krymov found himself in the United States, and in Russia, his name disappeared from theater posters, with his plays being gradually removed from repertoires.
We traveled to New York to talk with Dmitry Krymov about whether theater is still important when the world is falling apart, what an artist can oppose to Evil, what Russian fairy tales were preparing us for, and how Russian literature can be preserved with the help of American actors.
