At least 10,000 people are missing in eastern Libya after a powerful storm caused 'unprecedented' flooding, destroying at least 20 per cent of the city of Derna.
Emergency crews found more than 1,500 bodies in the wreckage on Tuesday, quickly becoming the most fatal environmental disaster in the country’s modern history.
Derna saw the most destruction when two dams – which had not been maintained for more than two decades – burst. The dams were unable to withstand the devastating floodwaters.
The death toll in Derna is now approximately 3,000, but the city’s deputy mayor Ahmed Madroud has indicated the number of those killed may be closer to 5,000, pending confirmation.
