Amazon Elastic Load Balancing (ELB) is a service provided by Amazon Web Services (AWS) that automatically distributes incoming application traffic across multiple targets, such as EC2 instances, containers, and IP addresses, within one or more availability zones. ELB helps ensure high availability and fault tolerance of applications by routing traffic only to healthy targets.
Key Features of Amazon ELB:
1. Load Balancer Types:
Amazon ELB offers three types of load balancers:
Application Load Balancer (ALB): Works at the application layer (Layer 7) and supports advanced routing and content-based routing.
Network Load Balancer (NLB): Operates at the transport layer (Layer 4) and is highly scalable, ideal for handling TCP/UDP traffic.
Gateway Load Balancer (GWLB): Routes traffic to a specific VPC endpoint, providing scalability and high availability for virtual appliances and network functions.
Note: Choose a Classic Load Balancer when you have an existing application running in the EC2-Classic network.
2. Automatic Scaling:
ELB automatically scales its request handling capacity in response to incoming traffic without requiring intervention from the user.
3. Health Checks:
ELB regularly performs health checks on registered targets to ensure that traffic is only routed to healthy instances.
4. SSL Termination:
ELB can terminate SSL connections from clients and re-encrypt the traffic before forwarding it to the registered targets, enhancing security.
5. Integration with AWS Services:
ELB seamlessly integrates with other AWS services like Auto Scaling, AWS Certificate Manager, and AWS CloudWatch for enhanced functionality and management.
6. Logging and Monitoring:
ELB provides detailed logs and metrics through AWS CloudWatch, enabling users to monitor traffic patterns, latency, and error rates.
