3 Tips for Installing Fiberglass Insulation
Installing fiberglass insulation is a great way to increase the energy efficiency of your home and reduce your energy bills. Our best 3 tips for improving the energy efficiency and insulation installation in your home are:
1. Measure and Rip the fiberglass batt insulation to fit the stud cavity dimensions (and add 1/2" to each dimension to give a snug fit that will hold itself in place and avoid gaps for air to leak).
Cut around electrical boxes, framing, and other plumbing penetrations in place to get the tightest fit possible.
Make sure not to over compress the fiberglass batt insulation. Fiberglass insulation loses 50% (or half) of its insulation effectiveness when it is over compressed. The best insulation is created by tiny trapped air pockets. Heat and energy and moist air move easily though air gaps, so its really important to get a snug fit and fluff the insulation for best results.
2. Split the fiberglass batt insulation, tucking half behind electrical wire and plumbing, and the other half in front of wire and plumbing. Then cut notches around extra wood framing, exposed penetrations like electrical boxes, plumbing drains, pipes, etc. That way you don't mis-measure and end up with gaps. Even a 1/2" gap can be a lot of air leakage. Cut the fiberglass batt insulation in place for best installation practice.
3. Caulk and Foam gaps around windows, doors, stud packs, top and bottom plates to keep air from leaking through the framing and into your home. 30% of average home energy loss is from leaky windows, doors and framing. Caulk gaps less than 1/4" wide, and spray foam gaps 1/4" - 3/4" wide. Carefully stuff fiberglass insulation scraps into larger gaps up to 2" wide.
